This book was chosen by our book club members from the list of banned books from our previous month’s read Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books. \nRSVP below! \nAbout this selection: \nBeginning in his own hometown of New Orleans\, Clint Smith leads the reader through an unforgettable tour of monuments and landmarks—those that are honest about the past and those that are not—that offer an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nation’s collective history\, and ourselves. \nIt is the story of the Monticello Plantation in Virginia\, the estate where Thomas Jefferson wrote letters espousing the urgent need for liberty while enslaving over 400 people on the premises. It is the story of the Whitney Plantation\, one of the only former plantations devoted to preserving the experience of the enslaved people whose lives and work sustained it. It is the story of Angola\, a former plantation-turned maximum security prison in Louisiana that is filled with Black men who work across the 18\,000-acre land for virtually no pay. DESCRIPTION:A Special Meeting of the WashoeDems Central Committee will be held on Wednesday\, April 22\, 2026\, at 6 PM for the purpose of holding an election to fill mid-term vacancies in the WasheDEMS Executive Board. \nNo other business shall be conducted at this meeting. This shall be a hybrid meeting\, held online via ZOOM and IN PERSON at our headquarters located at 1465 Terminal Way\, Suite 1\, Reno\, NV\, 89502. \nCheck-in 5:30\nMeeting: 6:00 pm \nAll members and guests must complete the registration form to attend (in person or online):\nMember Registration Form \nMembers attending via Zoom must also complete Zoom registration:\nZoom Registration  \nNotice of Election\nDue to the recent resignations of our Chair and Secretary\, we will be holding an election for these Executive Board positions at a special central committee meeting on Wednesday\, April 22\, 2026. Additionally\, if the current First Vice Chair (Acting Chair) is elected Chair\, the office of First Vice Chair will immediately become vacant and an election will be conducted to fill that position. \nThe election documents are below and at the WashoeDEMS Central Committee page \n\nElection Rules\nExecutive Board Role and Responsibilities\nPrintable Nomination Form (downloadable pdf)\nOnline Nomination Form (online form)\n\nShown below are the Board positions up for election with a brief description of the duties of each. For an in depth description of each office go HERE. \nCHAIR\nChief Executive Officer of the Democratic Party of Washoe County – preside over WCCC and Executive Board meetings; implement policies; appoint chairs of standing and special committees; authorized WashoeDEMS spokesperson. \nFIRST VICE CHAIR\nLiaison with Affiliate Groups  – maintain records of affiliate group bylaws; organize and lead quarterly joint meetings with the Executive Board and the Advisory Council; assume the duties of the Chair in the Chair’s absence. \nSECRETARY\nMaintain non-financial records of party business – record and prepare the agenda and minutes for WCCC meetings\, its Executive Board\, and the WashoeDEMS’ County Convention; maintain roster of WCCC members. \nElection Overview: \n\nThe election will be held at the Washoe County Central Committee\nmeeting on Wednesday\, April 22\, 2026.\nEach candidate must be a registered Democrat residing in Washoe County.\nPrior to the opening of the election\, notice of the election and the filing deadline\, along with the nomination form will be sent out to members of the WCCC via email.\nNomination forms shall be available in a downloadable print format (pdf) and online format (Google form).\nEach candidate is required to file a nomination form to run for this position. Along with the nomination form\, each candidate may submit an initial statement of qualifications and experience.\n\nFiling and Election Dates: \n\nFiling for the these positions\, will open on Tuesday\, March 31 2026\, at 9:00 AM.\nClosing deadline: Applicants must complete and submit a nomination form through the online form or designated email no later than Friday\, April 10\, 2026\, at 5:00 PM to be considered a candidate for election.\nCompleted candidate nomination forms and statements of intent shall be posted on the DPWC website by Monday\, April 13\, 2026.\nAll e-mail communications to the WCCC member list from candidates shall be sent by DPWC. Email communications shall be limited to ONE (1) message per candidate.\nCandidate messages must be received by Friday\, April 10\, 2026\, at 5:00 PM and will be posted on the website and emailed to the WCCC members by Monday\, April 13\, 2026.\n\nWCCC members who are unable to attend \nPlease notify us via the registration form. This will be considered written notification to our Secretary and your absence will be excused. This is very important because Article 4 Section 3B of our bylaws states: “Any member who misses two (2) consecutive meetings of the WCCC shall be considered to have vacated his or her membership unless prior written notification is made to the Secretary of the WashoeDEMS.” \n“Day Of” Meeting Information\nOnline Attendees: Please sign in between 5:00-5:30pm.
