Sarah Mahler, Chair of the Democratic Party of Washoe County, is a first generation American and a fierce progressive. She is passionate about Democratic issues, especially education, fair wages, affordable healthcare and housing, sensible gun legislation, social justice, protecting the environment, immigration and voting rights, and the future of our Democracy. As Chair, Sarah is dedicated to building a party that is open, transparent and accessible. Her agenda includes improving the lives of working families in Washoe County by organizing support for Democratic candidates from the top to the bottom of the ballot.
Sarah has been active during every campaign season since 2008 at an ever-increasing commitment level, culminating in her election to the volunteer leadership role of Chair of the Democratic Party of Washoe County in 2017. Her activist involvement includes grassroots organizing, voter registration drives, Organizing for America, Progressive Democrats of America, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, and opposition to Bureau of Land Management leases to fracking companies.
A California native, Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree in zoology at Humboldt State University where she met her husband Eric. In 1989, she received her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Washington State University. Sarah and Eric moved their family to Nevada more than 20 years ago and live in Spanish Springs. As Chief Executive of the WashoeDEMS, the Chair serves as head of the county party organization, appoints committee leaders, presides over meetings, serves as ex officio member of the State Executive Board, and coordinates activities with the Nevada State Democratic Party, elected officials and candidates.
